The client had a fibreglass pool in the back yard that had shifted from its original position due to the movement of the retaining wall, so it was decided to replace the fibreglass pool with a concrete pool.
Tight access landscaping is not new to the landscapers from Visual Landscape Gardening, having narrow excavators to pass through tight access points.
Concrete Sleeper Retaining Walls
Replacement of the failed concrete sleeper retaining wall using 150UB galvanised steel uprights were set in a 600mm diameter bored pier/holes and filled with 32Mpa concrete. 32Mpa concrete is watertight so this eliminates the chance of moisture affecting the steel uprights. Heavy duty, 100mm thick, steel re-enforced concrete sleepers were installed between the uprights. A heavy-duty plastic membrane was fitted behind the wall and an 80mm geo textile filtered agricultural drain was installed for drainage behind the wall and partially back filled with 14mm quartzite aggregate.
Concrete sleeper retaining walls are ideal where strength is required and for placing a fence on top.Colourbond Good Neighbour Fencing
A Colourbond, corrugated, Good Neighbour fence was erected on top of the concrete sleeper retaining wall and re-enforced with powder coated 50mm x 50mm posts that were welded to the steel uprights of the concrete sleeper retaining wall.
Good Neighbour fencing provides the perfect fence choice for privacy and as a background because it can be matched to whatever colour scheme you have, they’re strong and when installed correctly will last a long time without the need for ongoing maintenance such as painting.Excavation & Surface Water Drainage System
The site was prepared for the new paving and landscaping work by removing the existing landscape and excavating approximately 80 tonne of dirt to achieve the correct bench levels needed.
The set out for the paving and drainage system needed exact and careful planning and consideration for this project to make sure alignments of drains and increments of pavers were considered to eliminate unsightly cuts.
A surface water drainage system was installed at the time using 90mm stormwater pipe set up in strategic positions for adequate drainage when it rains.
Expansion joints were carefully considered and installed around the pool ready for the wet laying of pavers.Pool Paving
A compacted Quartzite quarry rubble base was prepared for the paving base before laying a forticon plastic vapour barrier which eliminates any sub surface moisture rising up through the concrete. Chairs and SL82 re-enforcement mesh was laid before a 32Mpa concrete base was poured ready for the wet lay paving.
Urbanstone 400mm x 400mm x 15mm Pepper Granite Adelaide pavers were wet laid around the pool and paths throughout the landscape project and grouted with a Mapei Kera colour grout. Expansion joints were installed with backing rod and coloured silicone to match the grout colour.
Pool paving requires experience because there are many elements to consider. Licensed paving contractors should always be used and as is the case with those employed by Visual Landscape Gardening, who have many years’ worth of experience paving around pools. When paving Adelaide gardens, especially around a pool, it’s a good idea to protect your pool pavers from staining by using a good quality sealer.
Paving And Landscaping
Pepper granite pavers were specially cut and used for all the garden edging to keep consistency through the landscape design which was wet laid on a concrete base for longevity and stability. Preparation is always the key to achieving a stunning and long-lasting result.
Paving and landscaping across Adelaide is extremely popular with paved paths creating a stunning feature in their own right. The best pavers to use for feature garden paths are large format and as with pool pavers, in fact even more importantly, you really should seal them as soon as possible to keep them looking great for years.Garden Features
A custom-made cantilevered shade structure with laser cut privacy screen was installed to the side of the pool with a composite timber seat, which also consisted of a storage box for pool equipment.
A custom-made stone seat was built in the corner of the back garden, with coping that matched the paving to create an area for a future fire pit. Barossa fines were spread and compacted to give a natural base for the fire pit area and made for a very practical garden feature.
Sub Surface Drip Irrigation System
A fully automated, sub surface drip irrigation system was installed for all lawn and garden beds using copper shield Netafim drip line to avoid roots entering internally into the drip line. A Wi-Fi ready irrigation timer was installed which can be operated via a smart phone from anywhere in the world gave the client complete flexibility and access to the system anytime, anywhere, even on holiday during Summer.
Low Voltage Garden Lighting
Quality L.E.D, low voltage garden lighting was installed in carefully planned locations to give maximum ambience during the evening to highlight the landscape design elements and so the beautiful garden can be enjoyed for entertaining, even after the Sun has gone down.
Garden Water Features
A bespoke water feature was carefully planned and installed within the landscape to increase ambience and to give a relaxing feel to the area with the sound of water quietly trickling without being overpowering.
Instant Lawn
Male sterile Kikuyu was chosen for the instant lawn which was a perfect choice for the area as the client has a dog. This ensures a robust application and highlights repair-ability factors second to none that are required with an active dog.
Garden Beds & Plants
All garden and lawn areas were cultivated with gypsum, composted and organic loam and prepared ready for lawn and plantings. Garden beds were conscientiously planted out with a comprehensive plant schedule consisting of Magnolias, Pittosporum, Murraya, Largerstroemia, Liriope, Buxus, Syzygium, Salvia, Raphiolepis, Cupaniopsis to name a few and of course a lemon tree to the corner. Garden beds were then mulched with a water saver organic mulch.
Privacy Screens
A powder coated aluminium slat privacy screen and gate was installed to the back of the existing carport to provide privacy and creating a feature at the same time.
Aluminium slat privacy screens come in many styles and can even be custom designed. Best of all they can be painted in just about any colour you wish, thanks to the Dulux powder coat colour range, making them a great low maintenance landscaping idea.
